The piece of text is from Emily Bronte's novel, Wuthering Heights. It depicts one of the main protagonists, Cathy Earnshaw, pouring her heart out about her lover, Heathcliff: "If all else perished and he remained, i should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn into a mighty stranger". Our task was to use a given font with no illustrations and to create a typographical piece based on our chosen text.
My methodology regarding the structure of my text is as follows; based on the speaker. Cathy was a woman of few desires but her true love; nothing else mattered to her, not even family. Her goal was true and simple. The main font size is 34 but the enlarged words are in 48 and they are "key words" in Cathy's desires. The word "ANNIHILATED" is in caps because Cathy is quite a pessimist of a character and it's negative emotions over passion that become her undoing in the novel. Lastly, as she speaks about what would happen to her if Heathcliff ceased to be, I have made the font size for each consecutive word one size smaller per word with four 48 sized spaces between to symbolize how lost and disconnected from reality she would feel.
Lastly, regarding rendering, there are many references to ghosts throughout the story and I have therefore chosen white text with a large, spread shadow behind. The lilac background is to create an atmospheric effect, especially among people who know the book; it's to represent the mist on the heather strewn moors of which Cathy and Heathcliff would spend their time together.
Note: This is an experimental piece; the first of a collection of Wuthering Heights graphics.
