Lecture notes (5) - Anna Powell - Design and Practice in Context

History/Theory
- how visual communication is effective to educate, inform or persuade in different medias

"The child looks and recognizes before i speaks" - John Berger.

"Images are unconsciously stored in long term memory" - Lyrell Burmark

"I like it - what is it?" - Anthony Burrilkl

To create effective visual practice: Practice, Theory and History.

Praxis - Aristotle:
- by which a theory, lesson or skill is enacted, embodied or realised.

Theory provides the substance with the style: each creates the other

Why theorize work?
- to learn about successful work in order to recognize improvement
- to design intelligently, rather than blindly and to carve out your own style
- opens up different realms of knowledge

Authorship:
- late 1980's, Steven Heller
- from designers serving clients to becoming an artist of your work

Auteur theory:
- having a distinctive, creative voice in studio interference, to create your own style (Quentin Tarrantino, Tim Burton, Martin Scorsese etc).
