Lecture notes (7) - Anna Powell - Semiotics

The ability to explain how visual communication works.

- The theory which explains how systemjs of signs work to make meaning, aesthetic communication: codes, languages, symbols, sounds, colour, non-linguistics.

Subconsciously, sophisticated readers understand semiotics; harder to analyze than explain.

Colour semiotics:
- can differ depending on who you are and where you're from (culturally dependent)

Culture semiotics:
- conditions us to live and react automatically to daily semiotics; governs our society through frequent sight

Differences between an icon, symbol and index

Icon: resembles the sign likeness/identification/association
Index:  Direct link between symbol and icon (example: smoke is an index of fire; indication, logical connection)
Symbol: Habit/rule, no logical connection
